New Lambton House

Alterations and Additions completed 2021

Following a significant restoration of a derelict cottage, Reu Studio was engaged to design an extension to the rear of the site, including living spaces, master bed and ensuite, laundry, and study. The extension’s simple plan and form is designed to prioritise solar access and cross ventilation to ensure high thermal performance in all seasons, while also being affordable and simple to build. Pragmatic facade detailing optimises access to natural light, permits direct sun in winter while shading in summer, and balances privacy, outlook, and connection to the garden.

Key principles:

  • Delineation between the original cottage and a modern extension

  • Dynamic volumes and treatment of light

  • Simple construction for an owner builder
